Hans Wegner's Papa Bear Chair
With a luxurious look and unprecedented comfort, Hans Wegner’s Papa Bear Chair is one of his most recognizable and popular designs. The somewhat unconventional name of the chair is based on a critic’s review which described the experience of sitting in this lounge chair as a “soft bear’s hug”. Cosy armrests and wings which are the most recognizable features of the Papa Bear softly close around the person sitting in it, thus certainly justifying the name of this classic of Danish design from 1951.
- Available in both classic and bold colours
- Leather, wool and fabric upholstery

A Modern Wing Chair
This lounge chair is more lightweight and more modern-looking than the traditional heavy wing chair. There is enough space to sit in many different ways, and this was precisely the core idea of Wegner’s design. Known for his focus on functionality and comfort, Wegner always took great care to keep his stylish designs functional and useful for the everyday life, and Papa Bear Chair is no exception. This classic of modern Danish design is created with relaxation and enjoyment in mind and Wegner made sure that the shape of the chair isn’t limiting in any way.
The Construction of Papa Bear Chair
The Papa Bear is built on a strong frame where the chair’s legs extend upward in a shallow curve, gradually merging with armrests, thus exemplifying Hans Wegner’s masterful usage of wooden shapes and joints, also visible in his other classics like the Wishbone chair. Designed by Wegner, the Papa Bear’s frame was manufactured by PP Møbler, a joinery company whose collaboration with Hans Wegner started with Papa Bear Chair, and lasted for many years. Furthermore, it was PP Møbler that resumed the production of Papa Bear Chair in 2003 on the 50th anniversary of the chair’s production.
The padding of the chair is made of different materials including springs, so no matter how you sit in it, you will always get the best possible support. The armrests are designed in such a way that you can put your legs over the side of the chair, or below the armrests.
Designed with following dimensions:
|Seat height||42 cm (oak, cherry and ash)|
Papa Bear Chair with Foot Stool
Want to take the comfort provided by the Papa Bear up a notch? Then you can buy a Papa Bear foot stool, which Wegner specifically designed to match with this lounge chair. Now you can put your feet up while watching TV in the evening or reading newspaper on a Sunday morning while enjoying in this timeless classic and the epitome of comfort. The foot stool is made of the same materials as the chair, so it matches it perfectly.
The price of an original Papa Bear Chair varies depending on the model, with the leather one being the most expensive. The price of a new chair is around 116.000kr (£13.630 / $17.415).
However, you can obtain the chair at a significantly lower price if you chose to buy a copy or a second-hand model. A good replica costs about a tenth of the price of an original, but keep in mind that you can only buy it from a retailer in Ireland.
A Papa Bear Chair is not cheap, but once purchased, it will last for many years to come because of its high quality, and this is true for both the original and the replica.
Papa Bear Chair Replica
One of the rather popular replicas is known as Skipper Papa Bear Chair, produced by Skipper Furniture. It might not be as good as the original, but is a very popular model which can also get rather expensive. However, you can buy an exact replica of the Wegner’s classic from Ireland, where the copyright law applies only for 25 years, so exact replicas are legal to produce and sell.
Second-Hand Papa Bear Chair
If you’re looking for a second-hand chair, eBay and other second-hand websites specialized in designer furniture might be a good bet. If you’re lucky, you can find one in good condition. If you have the courage and budget to make a bid on the chair, the auction websites such as Lauritz can be a great place to look.
When buying second-hand, be sure to check the upholstery and padding thoroughly before making a purchase, since reupholstering is quite expensive. If the chair is not in good condition, you should negotiate the price down, or maybe even forgo the purchase. In the last couple of years, there is a tendency to raise the prices on second-hand models despite a large amount of models available on the market. If the chair is being sold as an original, it must have a label from Danish Furniture Makers’ Control.
